Liverpool owners FSG have operated on a strict budget in the transfer window, opting to reinvest in the club largely from player sales, but that may significantly change in the future. Liverpool's net spend ever since Jurgen Klopp took charge has been widely documented with the big-money signings of Virgil van Dijk and Alisson among others being offset by the sales of Philippe Coutinho and other big departures.

Danny Ings, Dejan Lovren and Mamadou Sakho have all come and gone from the first team.

But the main source of income in the transfer market for Liverpool over the years has been from the players who have graduated from the academy.

That's continued this summer with close to £30million coming in from the likes of Harry Wilson, Taiwo Awoniyi and Liam Millar all being sold.

According to The Athletic, Liverpool have amassed more than £120m over the last five years in players who have either come through their own academy or been snapped up at a young age from other clubs.

Rhian Brewster has been the biggest success story in terms of returns in the transfer market with Sheffield United agreeing a deal worth £23.5m having not played a single minute in the Premier League.

Others such Ryan Kent, Danny Ward and Kevin Stewart have also brought in great returns in the transfer market.

But the report goes on to point out how Premier League clubs can no longer sign under-18 players from abroad due to Brexit.

Under the current regulations, Liverpool wouldn't have been able to bring in someone like Ki-Jana Hoever, who was sold on for £13.5m a year ago.

And the likes of Billy Koumetio, Jake Cain, Leighton Clarkson and Marcelo Pitaluga all feature in Jurgen Klopp's pre-season squad this summer.

There is still a focus for the academy players to force there way into the first-team much like Trent Alexander-Arnold.

But finding £120m over a five-year span from selling players who came through the academy may be a difficult task to recreate due to Brexit.

And that may leave transfer chief Michael Edwards trying to find a new way of bringing in more income to reinvest in the first team.
