Rio Ngumoha compensation battle

Rio Ngumoha is not only Liverpool's 16-year-old match-winner at Newcastle last night, he is also the topic of a 'bitter' legal dispute, say The Telegraph.

Last summer Ngumoha joined the Reds from rivals Chelsea when he was still just 15.

In Ngumoha's case he was offered a scholarship to stay with the Blues, who he had been with since the age of 10, but refused to move to Merseyside.

As a fee was never agreed between the clubs, this is due to be settled by a 'compensation committee' soon.

There are no set tariffs for deals of this nature though it is said Chelsea are particularly determined to get the highest amount possible from Liverpool for Ngumoha in a bid to deter their rivals from poaching their talent in future.

The highest-ever compensation paid was actually by Liverpool for Harvey Elliott, as they were forced to pay Fulham £4.3m in 2019.
