Alexander Isak is reportedly expected to miss the Professional Footballers' Association awards gala on Tuesday night.

As a nominee for the main award, the Sweden striker has been formally invited amid the long-running transfer saga over a potential move to Liverpool.

Isak has allegedly told Newcastle United he will never play for them again despite having three years left on a contract.



His intention is to achieve a transfer to Liverpool, who so far have seen a £110m bid rejected at the start of August and have made no follow-up since.

The new Premier League campaign is underway, Isak remains exiled on Tyneside and there are two weeks of the window left to complete a transfer should the Reds receive a hint their rivals are willing to do business.

He is in a difficult position having been invited to attend the upcoming PFA awards gala, which would be his first public appearance representing Newcastle since this saga kicked off.

BBC Sport reports that he is not expected to attend the event on Tuesday night at Manchester's Opera House.

They explain that whilst it is not uncommon for nominees to only confirm their attendance within 24 hours of the ceremony, other sources have indicated that he will not show his face.

After scoring 27 goals in all competitions last season, Isak was nominated for the players' player of the year award alongside Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes, Chelsea's Cole Palmer, Arsenal's Declan Rice plus Liverpool pair Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah.

At the time of his nomination, the Magpies had celebrated their player's nomination by posting to X the words: "Ice cold Isak."

But since that time he has been frozen out of training with Eddie Howe's squad with a resolution to this new situation yet to come.

The Newcastle manager would like this stand-off to end, however, with the striker's return to his team.

"The door is well and truly open.

The ownership, the players, we need that clarity," Howe said following his side's 0-0 draw with Aston Villa on Saturday.

"I’m not in control of that, it’s one person really that can control that."
