Liverpool are eyeing up a move for Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo as they look to bring in a new centre-back to the club.

Sources told Football Insider on 20 September that Marc Guehi is Liverpool’s favourite option to stiffen their defence but they face strong competition from Europe’s elite going into January.

Konate is edging closer to a move from Liverpool to Real Madrid with the Frenchman’s contract set to expire at the end of the 2025-26 season.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Araujo is being targeted by several clubs across Europe with the Reds closely monitoring his situation.

Sources told Football Insider on 22 September that Barcelona and Bayern Munich have joined the race to sign Guehi.

The Englishman’s prospective move to join the Reds fell through in the dying moments on deadline day in the summer transfer window.

This has forced Arne Slot to return for the Crystal Palace talisman in the January transfer window with other top European clubs bidding to tempt the centre-back away from heading to Anfield.

Speaking on the Inside Track podcast over Liverpool‘s possible pivot away from Guehi to the Uruguayan, I explained: “Araujo is a top defender at Barcelona, an Uruguay international as well.

“He’s on the list of a number of clubs as well as Liverpool because he is one of the best young defenders in Europe, it’ll be real difficult deal for them to do.

“As I said, he’s a key man for Barcelona.

“A lot would depend on whether Barcelona’s financial situation is sorted or not, or whether Barcelona need to raise funds and then they might have to cash in on something like Araujo.

“But yeah, I think right now Liverpool are still concentrating on getting the deal done for Marc Guehi as they look to bring in a new centre back.”

Football Insider exclusively revealed on 15 September that Liverpool are confident they’ll beat Real Madrid and Man City to Guehi.

The 25-year-old holds all the power when it comes to deciding on his next destination presuming he leaves on a free at the end of June 2026.

The Eagles have to reassess their transfer position in the January window or risk letting the number six leave for nothing which could be detrimental to a club such as Palace.

Araujo’s lengthy contract will most likely put the Reds off splashing the cash when they have the option of reigniting their pursuit of the Englishman in the new year.
