When Rosella Ayane's low, left-footed drive nestled into the bottom corner at Prenton Park last Sunday, it felt like Liverpool's season could be taking a turn for the worse. The Reds had gone into their clash with Tottenham off the back of consecutive defeats to Leicester and Arsenal. It were also in the midst of a pretty extensive injury crisis, with as many as seven senior players — including four of the forward line — consigned to the treatment table. In spite of those dispiriting circumstances, Liverpool made a bright start against Spurs, with both Ceri Holland and Katie Stengel spurning good chances to give the hosts an early lead on Merseyside.

When the final whistle eventually sounded at Prenton Park, it felt like almost the entire stadium took a collective sigh of relief.
