Liverpool is back at Anfield today as it continues its preparations for the new season, with the Premier League title defense just days away now.

The Reds get the 2025/26 campaign underway against Bournemouth on August 15, but before then, Arne Slot's side will be looking to get more minutes in the legs against Athletic Club today.

The clubs will play two games at Anfield later in what is essentially Liverpool's final run-out before the real work gets underway, with the Reds heading to Wembley on Sunday to take on Crystal Palace in the Community Shield.

It's also set to be an emotional day as Liverpool plays its first game back at home following the tragic deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, with the pair set to remembered by players and fans alike this evening.

Follow all the action from Anfield with our live updates below.

Encouraging stuff for the Reds though.

James Findlater

Ben Doak reaction

The young Liverpool winger has just been speaking to LFCTV about making his return to action after the second half of his season on loan at Middlesbrough was wrecked by injury:

It’s a big relief to get back out there and to be playing minutes at a very high level.

It was a bit gutting, the team were in a very good place and a great group of lads up there, but that’s just the way things go sometimes.

The referee brings the game to an end, and that's a comprehensive win for a young Liverpool team in its first game against Athletic Club.

James Findlater

Athletic has a goal back - Luca Stephenson gets his header wrong and it falls kindly for Guruzeta to head home.

James Findlater

Substitutions

Trent Kone-Doherty comes on for Rio Ngumoha, who gets a great reception after yet another outstanding performance.

Tommy Pilling is also coming on, replacing Trey Nyoni who looked to be stretching his hamstring a bit.

James Findlater

Close

Berenguer goes close for the visitors - he manages to skip past Lucky and tries to get a shot off under pressure from Robertson, but fires wide

KEY EVENT

GOAL!

Elliott makes it 4!

It's another for Liverpool as Harvey Elliott turns the ball home after good work from Tsimikas and Nunez!

James Findlater

Substitutions

Jayden Danns and Wellity Lucky are coming on in place of Alexis Mac Allister and Ben Doak.

James Findlater

Great stop

Great work from Pecsi as he comes out quickly to deny the Athletic forward - he's stopped what looked like a certain goal there.

James Findlater

Back underway

We're back underway in the second half, with Athletic getting an early chance to test Pecsi as Tsimikas gives away a free-kick around 20 yards out.

It's drilled straight into the wall, and Pecsi is able to pounce on the loose ball without any fuss.

That'll help settle the nerves.

James Findlater

Half-time substitution

The players are in the tunnel ahead of the second half.

Looks like Liverpool will be making a change in goal, with Armin Pecsi coming on to replace Freddie Woodman in goal.

James Findlater

Half-time

The referee brings the first-half to an end, and what half it's been for Liverpool's youngsters!

They lead 3-0 thanks to goals from Rio Ngumoha, Darwin Nunez and Ben Doak - more of the same in the second half please!

KEY EVENT

GOAL!

What a goal that would have been!

It falls to Doak about 25 yards from goal on the half-volley, and he blasts it toward goal and forces the save from the goalkeeper.

James Findlater

Long throw experiment continues

Tsimikas goes for the long throw - he's certainly better at it than Ryan Gravenberch was in Japan last week, but it's headed out by Athletic.

James Findlater

Nyoni to the rescue

Great defending from Nyoni!

Liverpool is caught on the break from a corner, and Athletic is 2-on-1 with the youngster, but Nyoni holds his nerve and cuts out the attempted pass which would have led to a certain goal.

James Findlater

Close!

Ben Doak almost catches the Athletic goalkeeper out!

He charges down the right and picks his head up, with his cross/shot heading in until the keeper claws it out.

James Findlater

Diogo Jota tribute

We've reached the 20th minute, and the Anfield crowd breaks out into applause in memory of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva, with the players pausing to join in as Jota's song is sung once again.

James Findlater

Close

Liverpool struggles to get the ball out of the penalty area, with Nyoni's clearance being cut out.

It's played to Gorosabel, who fires the ball just over the bar in a warning shot to the hosts.

James Findlater

Injury

Stoppage in play as an Athletic player receives a bit of treatment - not entirely sure what sort of knock he might have picked up.

What a start from Liverpool though, and in particular Rio Ngumoha, who is once again catching the eye.
