Former Liverpool midfielder Don Hutchison says the Club World Cup prize money is substantial enough that big teams will want to take it seriously — though the Reds won't be involved in the inaugural edition.

Liverpool missed out on qualifying for the tournament, which kicks off on Sunday, because it hasn't won the Champions League recently enough.

Chelsea and Manchester City will instead be the English representatives in the United States.

But while it isn't yet known how seriously clubs will take the competition and whether it might look more like a pre-season training camp, Hutchison thinks Liverpool will be desperate to be involved next time around — in four years' time.

For Chelsea, it could get them a star, a leader, someone to take charge of the younger players.

"I do like the angle where they said we've won everything.

When you go into a tournament and it's the days before you’re thinking I’m knackered, I need a rest.

"And then as soon as you get to a tournament, as soon as Chelsea and they see like Man City, Real Madrid, Inter Miami, Palmeiras, Fluminense, and all the legendary teams, all of a sudden the adrenaline kicks in, you're a competitor and you want to win it.

Then the management will probably drum into the players that if they win, they can get an elite player in for next season."

England boss Thomas Tuchel, meanwhile, believes that Liverpool and Arsenal will have a big advantage in the Premier League next season as a result of not being involved in the Club World Cup.

"I think [the Club World Cup] will have a huge impact and it will give Liverpool and Arsenal a huge advantage in the next season to not be there," Tuchel said before England vs Senegal.

"I think it will be a very nice experience for the players who are there, to play this tournament for the first time
