Alexander Isak has told Newcastle United he won't play for them this season as he eyes a Liverpool move(Image: Getty)
Newcastle United could end Liverpool target Alexander Isak's transfer saga by agreeing to sell him next year once they've found a suitable replacement, says ex-Premier League defender Chris Powell.
He suggests that the club could extend an olive branch to Isak by agreeing to let him go in 12 months' time, once a suitable replacement has been found.
"There is a way back for Newcastle if they say to Isak, 'Give us a year,'" said Powell, speaking on the Footy Accumulators No Tippy Tappy Football podcast in partnership with BOYLE Sports.
"We've seen it before with (Cristiano) Ronaldo and (Sir Alex Ferguson) Fergie, give him a year and he can go next summer.
He is currently training apart from his Newcastle colleagues.
Powell has proposed that the club reach a final decision with Isak and convince him to remain for another campaign before guaranteeing a departure next summer when a fresh striker can be signed without desperation.
However, the 55-year-old acknowledges that Isak's move to Liverpool appears inevitable, despite the club maintaining he remains unavailable for transfer.
"I think Isak's going to Liverpool.
For him to do that and express his desire to leave, he's going," added Powell, whose latest coaching position was with Sheffield Wednesday, whom he departed in July.
"They're not going to keep him and tell him he's in the reserves.
He's going to Liverpool.
The league is over."
