Liverpool are working hard behind the scenes to address one major issue following the summer transfer window.

Arne Slot’s side have had the perfect start to the season, winning four out of four in the Premier League, as well as beating Atletico Madrid in their Champions League opener.

Despite their impressive run of results, Liverpool have been questioned for their performance levels so far this term.

They have left it late in all five of their matches so far, going into the last 10 minutes of each game with the scores level, before somehow coming up with the goods.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that the Reds have one big issue that they are working hard to fix.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that Liverpool’s Achilles heel is their defence, and they are looking at ways to fix their backline.

Slot’s side have conceded six goals in their first five games, and have often been exposed when up against threatening attacks.

Wyness added that the fact Liverpool failed to sign Marc Guehi meant they missed out on the obvious answer to their problems.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Liverpool’s Achilles heel seems to be at the back.

They had a pretty lucky result at Burnley at the weekend with an injury-time penalty that perhaps should have been retaken, as well as their last-minute winner against Atletico Madrid.

“But nevertheless, it does seem the defence is their Achilles heel and they’ve got to have somebody in place, and I’m sure that the Liverpool team behind the scenes will be looking very hard at how they’re going to fix that situation.

“Marc Guehi was the obvious answer, but that didn’t quite happen, and I’m sure they put a lot of eggs in that basket.

They’ve got to think again, and it’s always going to be tough bringing in players, particularly from overseas, to fit into the Liverpool squad during the last part of the season.

“So this is the one area that people are going to keep a watch at Liverpool just now because it is their Achilles heel.”

Meanwhile, Slot will now rotate between Andy Robertson and Milos Kerkez after the Hungarian’s difficult start to life at Liverpool, sources have told Football Insider.

The former Bournemouth defender has started all four of the Reds’ Premier League games so far this season.

However, Kerkez was substituted in the first half against Burnley after being shown an early yellow card for simulation.

Sources say that the 21-year-old will now be rotated with Robertson more regularly, as Slot looks to solidify the left-hand side of his defence.
