Jeremie Frimpong has been signed by Liverpool for £29.5m from Bayer Leverkusen.

A deal wrapped up before the transfer window has even officially opened, it shows a real sign of intent from Liverpool that this could be a transformative window for the club.

The deal that has seen the Netherlands full-back join the club will be paid across three years in instalments, a remarkable piece of business from Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards.

The Reds moved quickly to sign the 24-year-old after triggering his release clause to bypass any potentially difficult negotiations with the Bundesliga side.

Jeremie Frimpong explained in an interview back in January that he nearly signed for Liverpool’s academy at the age of nine before ending up at Manchester City.

Speaking to Rising Ballers, he said: “When I was younger Liverpool first came, that was a no-brainer.

I chose Liverpool, I was going to sign for them.

My family weren’t driving like that and it was far and obviously Man City was local.”

Frimpong has sported the No.30 shirt at Celtic and Bayer Leverkusen in the six seasons since he has left Manchester City and Liverpool revealed yesterday following the announcement of their newest signing, that his shirt number will be decided at a later date.

With Liverpool out of action until the end of July, there is no rush to give the Dutchman a kit number because he won’t be touching the pitch for Liverpool until then.

Liverpool are set to embark on a tour of Asia at the end of July, so Frimpong’s first appearance could come then as the Reds face AC Milan in Hong Kong on July 26th and then Yokohama F.

Marinos four days later.

The No.30 shirt is currently free at Liverpool if Frimpong chooses to continue the tradition, left vacant since Suso left the club in 2015.

A more traditional number for a right-back, No.2, is currently occupied by Joe Gomez and so it remains to be seen what Frimpong will be wearing on his back come the start of next season.

Joe Gomez has been linked with a move away this summer but his injury record could put off potential suitors, as he missed the majority of the season once again for Liverpool this campaign.

Jeremie Frimpong will officially become a Liverpool player when the summer transfer window opens on June 1st.
