Liverpool continued their pre-season preparations this weekend with a friendly defeat to Serie A giants AC Milan in Hong Kong.

However, it’s fair to say more attention has been focused on off-pitch matters, with the Reds agreeing a fee with Bayern Munich for the sale of winger Luis Diaz.

Liverpool also continue to be linked with a blockbuster move for Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak, though the Magpies remain firm in their ‘not for sale’ stance.

Arne Slot has been heavily backed following his Premier League success last season, with significant additions including Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Hugo Ekitike.

The saga took a new turn when it emerged the Sweden international had stayed behind on Tyneside as the rest of the squad departed for their pre-season tour of the Far East on Thursday.

While Newcastle insist his absence is injury-related, it has been widely reported that the player is keen on a move away from St James’ Park this summer and wants to explore his options.

The departure of Diaz, along with the expected exit of Darwin Nunez, would free up funds for a potential record-breaking offer, though a formal bid will reportedly only be made if and when Liverpool receive some encouragement from Newcastle.

Another attacking name linked with Liverpool this summer is Real Madrid’s out-of-favour winger Rodrygo.

His limited role at the Club World Cup this summer has only added fuel to exit speculation.
