Liverpool have recently been linked with Jarrod Bowen, in one of the more left-field transfer rumours so far this summer.

Any move may be dependent on the departures of Xherdan Shaqiri and Divock Origi, but even these sales would surely not come close to covering the cost of Bowen — FSG would have to pay top dollar to West Ham for an English talent contracted for four more years, which would represent a colossal gamble.

According to The Athletic, the winger forms part of an attacking shortlist at Anfield.

It’s encouraging to hear that an attacking shortlist is being drawn up at Liverpool, and it’s a credit to Bowen that he has made the list, but the risk involved surely makes this transfer a non-starter for FSG.

First, it’s worth noting the reasons why Liverpool’s reported interest makes a degree of sense.

By then, Bowen would no longer be a young talent, and the club would already have to be keeping half an eye on how he would eventually be replaced.

Nor is it just a case of Bowen now being ‘Premier League proven’: the ability to transfer good performances to a higher level shows a capacity to develop and grow, an attribute hugely important to Jürgen Klopp and suggestive of the fact that the player could improve still further at Liverpool.
