Liverpool's Title Win Becomes A Pub Quiz Maths Question

The 2024/25 Premier League campaign turned into a?historic and memorable?one for Liverpool, as new manager Arne Slot quickly quashed all the concerns that fans understandably had about him coming in as Jurgen Klopp's replacement following the unexpected announcement that he was relinquishing his role at Anfield and would be stepping away last summer.

The pointed and self confident 46 year old Dutchman had some big shoes to fill, but he filled them well and admirably dealt with all the off pitch transfer issues that we had at the point when it came to talents like Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk and their contract expiry issues.

Liverpool are not new to historic football upsets and betting surprises, and although few thought that this was on the cards, history will show that by the end of his first 12 months in charge, despite adding only Federico Chiesa to the playing squad, he had led us pretty comfortably into first place in the Premier League table with 25 wins and nine draws from his 38 games.

For the record, nearest chasers and runners up Arsenal were a full ten points behind us.

Clearly, expectations and hopes for the coming 2025/26 campaign have now gone through the roof, particularly following the signings so far of Jeremie Frimpong, Armin Pecsi, Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez as we have almost hit the £200 million spend mark, and there are few signs that we are done yet in the transfer market with so many weeks remaining, but this is still a time for reflection and to fully enjoy the achievement of lifting our record equalling 20th title.

We also did it in a manner that nobody but the most storied (read geeky) mathematicians had even seen coming, as we seem to have achieved the Fibonacci Sequence.

Let me explain.

In lifting our second Premier League title, and our 20th overall, we have finalised a series of numbers that has been in the works for the past 33 years following the formation of the rebranded Premier League back in 1992.

When you list Liverpool alongside other PL title winners by titles won, starting with the lowest, you now get - 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13.

Fellow winners have obviously been Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Leicester City and Blackburn Rovers.

Whilst that sequence of numbers means very little to the vast majority of the Anfield faithful, for the likes of Rachel Riley and other maths aficionados, that is the Fibonacci sequence wherein each number (following the first two) is the sum of the previous two numbers in the sequence.

The sequence has previously been found in the spirals of seeds on sunflower heads, down to the bracts of pinecones, and even family tree patterns in some species of animals and it was first introduced to science back in 1202 by Leonardo of Pisa, after he popularised the sequences in his book Liber Abaci.

Suffice to say, it is probable that at some point in history it would be plausible to think that the Premier League sequence may be built on, but it certainly will not happen in most of our lifetimes, so just enjoy the beer and the action is my advice —especially as we look ahead with excitement after the signing of Wirtz and Kerkez.
