Liverpool's final game of the season at Newcastle could be moved to a neutral venue amid police fears over the #cans hashtag and home fans gathering to celebrate the end of Mike Ashley’s ownership.

Supporters of the Magpies have been anticipating the completion of a Saudi-led takeover since news broke of a £300million deal being agreed in April. It is currently awaiting Premier League approval.

And we can reveal that Northumbria Police have flagged concerns over Newcastle fans congregating at St James’ Park on the final weekend of the campaign to toast the back of Ashley.

Sources say the force are aware of the #cans hashtag on social media, which has been used by supporters when talking about the prospect of raising a beer on confirmation of the takeover.

There is also the consideration of Liverpool fans travelling to Tyneside to mark the final match of a title-winning season.

As such, Northumbria Police retain concerns over supporters of both clubs converging on the city centre stadium, especially as lockdown guidelines are likely to have been relaxed still further by the weekend of July 25/26.

Meanwhile, Newcastle have been given no indication why their away trip to Manchester City has also been included on a list of fixtures that could be switched to a neutral venue.

There has been a suggestion it is because the game could be targeted by supporters or opponents of the Saudi takeover.

However, as sources indicated, Newcastle are also set to host City in the FA Cup and there are no such worries over that game among Northumbria Police. It is likely, therefore, that the Premier League fixture will take place at the Etihad Stadium.

Sportsmail reported on Tuesday that the Premier League are hopeful no more than four matches will be held at neutral venues.
