Liverpool's final match of their likely title-winning season could be played at a neutral venue, because police reportedly fear Newcastle fans could gather at St James' Park to mark the end of Mike Ashley's ownership.

With confirmation of a takeover by a Saudi Arabia-led consortium eventually expected to come from the Premier League, Northumbria Police have reportedly expressed concerns that Magpies fans could head to the game to toast the end of the unpopular owner.

Supporters have been long using the #cans hashtag on social media to discuss raising a beer to celebrate the end of the Ashley regime, and the Mail Online report that police feel there is a chance that fans could use the game against the Reds to gather to say a long-awaited goodbye to him.

The final weekend of the Premier League season is set to fall on July 25-26, when social distancing rules in bars and pubs are likely to have eased.

Therefore authorities see St James' Park as a potential venue for issues given its proximity to Newcastle city centre.

The report adds that there is also concern that Liverpool fans could gather for the final game of what by then would surely be confirmed as a title-winning season.

The Reds are likely to have already got their hands on the trophy by then though, with Merseyside Police set to confirm soon that they are happy for both Liverpool and Everton to see out the season in their home grounds.

Liverpool's final home game of the season is against Chelsea, and that is traditionally when teams get their hands on the Premier League trophy should they have won it by then.

There is no suggestion as yet where the Newcastle vs Liverpool fixture could be played if it is moved, although both Old Trafford and Villa Park are due to be free that weekend.
