Liverpool's ideal Alexander Isak back-up is so clear, Arne Slot even tried to sign him last summer - opinion

Liverpool are battling against the clock as they attempt to bring in another world-class forward this summer.

The Reds had a revamp of their attacking options right towards the top of their to-do list this summer, but are so far falling flat in their efforts.

Hugo Ekitike has been signed, and no one could have predicted the devastating way in which Liverpool have lost Diogo Jota, but otherwise it is safe to say that Richard Hughes has done some strange work.

In isolation, few Liverpool fans would argue too strongly against the sales of Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez.

So far, with just ten days of the transfer window to go, that has not happened.

Part of the reason for that is because Liverpool are determined to land Alexander Isak from Newcastle.

But with the Geordies still adamant that Isak is unlikely to be for sale, they may yet have to pivot to another option.

Thankfully, they have a clear one in Julian Alvarez.

As he looked for a way out of being back up to Erling Haaland at Manchester City, Alvarez’s agent confirmed that Liverpool tried to sign him last year.

Ultimately, the Argentine would go on to join Atletico Madrid, where he enjoyed a brilliant debut campaign, scoring 29 goals.

Clearly, Atletico would not want to lose last season’s top scorer, but if Liverpool do lose out on Isak, they would have the capability to go big on Alvarez.

The 25-year-old is a very different type of forward to Isak, but it is easy to see how he could dovetail with Ekitike and Florian Wirtz to good effect.

Should the door firmly close from Newcastle’s end in the coming days, there is no way Arne Slot can go into the season with his current options.

There has to be a new arrival.

Liverpool may see fit to wait for January before launching another assault for Isak, but with other potential market options already off the table, Alvarez is the one who could make an instant difference.

Clearly, a deal to sign Alvarez would be tricky to pull off for Liverpool, but what can be said with a degree of certainty is that the World Cup winner would cost less than Isak.

With that in mind, Liverpool do have the funds to go all in on Alvarez, and so his price becomes something of a moot point.

Nevertheless, the Reds would still be looking for value, and with Atletico having paid £81m to sign Alvarez just one year ago, they may not find it here.

Either way, Liverpool have shown many times before that they will not compromise in the transfer market.

Alvarez would fit the bill in a way no one else really would.
