The conversation at Kirkby’s AXA Training Centre had turned to slow starts on the back of an error-strewn first-half performance at newly-promoted Fulham in last Saturday’s lunchtime Premier League fixture, which left them playing already catch-up after the season’s opening weekend.

“Having a slow start doesn’t mean you have to start slow all the time or you will never do it again, but it’s a sign – use it as information, change it and go from there.” Rather than being caught cold by an opponent’s tactical approach and taking time to react, Klopp insists it’s more to do with not being mentally “switched on” from the opening seconds.

In four of those seven games, Liverpool conceded in the opening 15 minutes.
