On Wednesday night, shock reports emerged that Liverpool had made an offer to sign Kevin De Bruyne as a free signing.
Sky Italy reported that although Napoli were big candidates to take the legendary Belgian, Liverpool also had their name in the hat.
Immediately, Liverpool fans grew excited – happy to ignore the Belgian’s £400,000-a-week wages posing a significant financial hurdle.
Negotiations would likely require a salary reduction.
Fans were also hopeful that the reports had an element of truth as the 33-year-old is a boyhood Liverpool fan due to his family’s affection for the Anfield club.
And while the news was nice to believe could happen, it has now been shut down by those on Merseyside.
Ian Doyle of the Liverpool Echo has now come out to suggest the rumours are wide of the mark, writing:
“Liverpool have not made an offer to sign departing Manchester City attacking midfielder Kevin De Bruyne this summer.”
“The ECHO understands that is not the case with the Reds’ recruitment team presently training their sights elsewhere to improve a squad that has romped to a 20th championship this season.”
