Liverpool are set to open contract renewal discussions with Luis Diaz this summer, aiming to secure the Colombian winger’s long-term future amid sustained interest from Barcelona.
The 28-year-old, whose current deal expires in 2027, was the club’s second top scorer this past 2024/25 campaign behind Mohamed Salah.
But his performances have also caught the eye of Barcelona’s sporting director Deco – who admitted his club “like” the forward.
The 28-year-old’s current £55,000-per-week deal runs until 2027, meaning that he will soon be within a year of his deal expiring – all while his market value continues to drop with age.
Well-known Colombian journalist Pipe Sierra previously reported earlier this month that contract talks would start in the “coming weeks”
Barcelona’s pursuit of Diaz stretches back to before his arrival at Liverpool.
Club president Joan Laporta confirmed that the Catalan side considered signing the winger during his time at Porto in 2021, but Liverpool’s ultimately won the race.
That missed opportunity has fueled ongoing speculation ever since.
With Liverpool now entering contract talks with Díaz, the transfer rumors have only intensified.
Now Spanish outlet Diario Sport have reported some alarming news coming out Luis Diaz’s camp.
According to them, the Colombian winger’s representatives has postponed discussions over a new deal until July – fueling speculation about a potential summer move to Barcelona.
It is claimed that Liverpool have tabled a two-year contract extension for Diaz, which would improve his salary but still fall short of the club’s top earners like Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk.
The winger, who is under contract until 2027, has enjoyed his best season at Anfield, contributing 17 goals and 8 assists across all competitions.
However, with his current wages significantly below his status as a first-team regular, Diaz and his representatives are seeking a more substantial increase.
The Reds have made it clear: if Diaz declines the extension, they are prepared to sell him this summer to avoid losing another star for free.
An €85 million price tag has been set, though reports suggest Liverpool may be willing to negotiate if talks stall.
The club is keen to resolve the situation quickly, with sporting director Richard Hughes expected to meet Diaz’s agent in July for decisive talks.
The Colombian has publicly stated his happiness at Liverpool and his openness to staying long-term, but the opportunity to join Barcelona – a club that has tracked him since his Porto days – surely remains tempting.
