In a touching display of solidarity and remembrance, Liverpool players Luis Diaz and Alisson Becker joined around 100 mourners at the Capela da Ressurreição São Cosme in Gondomar, Portugal, on Wednesday evening for the 7th-day memorial mass honoring Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva.
The emotional gathering comes exactly one week after the tragic car accident in Zamora, Spain, that claimed the lives of both brothers – a tradition deeply rooted in Portuguese Catholic culture where families and friends reconvene seven days after the funeral to pray for the souls of the departed.
The presence of Diaz and Alisson at Wednesday’s memorial carries particular weight, as both South American stars were unable to attend last Saturday’s funeral in Gondomar due to geographical constraints.
According to Portuguese outlet O Jogo, among those in attendance were Portugal internationals Diogo Costa, José Sá, Rúben Neves, André Horta, and João Mário.
The president of the Portuguese Football Federation, Pedro Proença, was present, as were federation directors Toni and Daniel Carriço, and national team assistant coach Ricardo Carvalho.
Super-agent Jorge Mendes, Estoril manager Ian Cathro, and the entire Penafiel squad – representing André Silva’s club – also reportedly joined the ceremony/
Meanwhile, it’s been reported that Sunday’s pre-season friendly against Preston North End at Deepdale will proceed as planned, marking the team’s first match since the tragedy.
The 3pm kick-off will be broadcast live on ITV1.
The decision to continue with the fixture came after extensive consultations with players and staff, who returned to the AXA Training Centre on Tuesday for the first time since the accident.
New signings Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, and Giorgi Mamardashvili were among those present for the emotional return to training.
Preston North End, showing remarkable class and sensitivity, have left all tribute arrangements to be guided by Liverpool, with the Championship side set to follow the Premier League champions’ lead on how best to commemorate the Portuguese forward.
The fixture represents not just Liverpool’s first pre-season match ahead of the 2025-26 season, but also the team’s first step back toward normalcy following an unimaginable loss
