Federico Chiesa has reportedly decided to stay at Liverpool this summer after Luis Diaz's exit.

Chiesa, who joined Liverpool in a cut-price £10million deal last summer, has been linked with a departure amid a lack of game time.

Fabrizio Romano reports that Chiesa has informed the Reds of his desire to remain at Anfield despite a lack of minutes.

However, the Euro 2020 winner could play an important role this season.

Arne Slot might have bought Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz this summer, but as well as Diaz, who joined Bayern Munich, Darwin Nunez has also departed.

The club launched one offer for Alexander Isak of £110million that was swiftly rejected.

They are yet to return to the table and don't plan to unless Newcastle give them encouragement they'd be willing to do business.

This leaves Liverpool short of an attacker, and if Chiesa can stay fit, he could prove to be the ideal solution.

The winger picked up a muscle injury shortly after his move from Juventus was complete.

He made just one Premier League appearance until January.

The second half of the campaign was a bit better, but he still only managed 14 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals and getting two assists.

But after coming off the bench on Friday against Bournemouth to score the crucial third, there are signs Chiesa could be an important player.

Speaking after his goal, Slot praised the 27-year-old's impact.

He said: "He had a hard time last season getting his fitness ready and unfortunately for him, he then missed the Asian tour and Joe Gomez the same.

The fans sung for him so many times last season, and it is very nice for him to give them something in return.

"That is difficult for me to tell you (why supporters have taken to Chiesa so well), although I am a fan, I am never standing on the Kop and don't come up with these songs.

"The only thing I can come up with is Federico had a great history, was a big player deciding to go from Italy to England, which you don't see that much.

I don't know, maybe it is also a nice song to sing, but then I probably don't give him the credits he deserves."

Slot spoke at length about Chiesa's song, and it has become a staple at Anfield.

The tune used is Dean Martin's 'Sway', and the lyrics are as follows:

Despite his lack of game time, Chiesa is a favourite among Liverpool fans, and after scoring his first Premier League goal, he could be in for a big season.

Before his injury nightmares at Juventus, the forward was considered one of the best young attacking players in Europe.

He played a crucial role in Italy being crowned European champions at Wembley in July 2021 and was linked with some of the biggest clubs in the world.

From that point on, it has been years of hell for Chiesa, but he showed with a stunning volley on opening night what he is capable of.
