Luis Diaz future at Liverpool becomes clearer as new Marcus Rashford twist emerges

Marcus Rashford has rejected the chance to move to Saudi Arabia, as he only wants to join Barcelona, which could have implications on the future of Liverpool forward Luis Diaz.

Barca is in the market for a new left-sided forward, and after missing out on Nico Williams, who recently signed a 10-year contract at Athletic Bilbao, Diaz and Rashford appear to be the Catalan club's top fallback targets.

Rashford clearly has no future at Manchester United after being cast aside by head coach Ruben Amorim, but the 27-year-old's monster salary could prove to be a stumbling block for potential suitors.

One place where there won't be an issue with Rashford picking up the same kind of salary he is on at United is Saudi Arabia, but Mundo Deportivo reports that the England forward has no intention of going there.

Rashford is said to still be waiting on a possible move to Barca — a club he supposedly "dreams" about joining and would be willing to take a significant pay cut in order to do so.

Rashford signed a five-year contract at United worth around $400,000 per week off the back of scoring 30 goals in the 2022-23 season, but he has tallied just 19 goals across the last two campaigns.

United value Rashford at around $47 million, which is significantly lower than Liverpool's valuation of Diaz, which is believed to be closer to the $90 million mark.

Diaz has been strongly linked with a Liverpool exit in recent times, with Barcelona and Bayern Munich — as well as clubs in Saudi Arabia — keen on the Colombia international.

Diaz's father previously said that Barcelona was his son's "dream" club, but if Rashford ends up moving to the Nou Camp, Bayern may well become Diaz's best option.

Barcelona admires Marcus Rashford as well as Diaz

However, Bayern Insider reported last week that the Bavarian club was not willing to pay any more than €60 million ($70 million), plus add-ons, to sign Diaz.

That is some way off the figure that Liverpool has in mind for Diaz, and if the Reds do not receive a seismic offer for the 28-year-old, it is possible that he will end up staying at Anfield.

Diaz is contracted to Liverpool until 2027, but he remains on the same terms that he signed upon joining the club from Porto in 2022, meaning that he is significantly underpaid relative to his importance to Arne Slot's squad.

Liverpool has reportedly attempted to address Diaz's contract situation but little progress has been made, but rather than sell him this summer — unless a massive offer comes in — the Reds would prefer to maximize Diaz's performance value over the next two years and allow him to leave as a free agent in 2027.
