Luis Diaz has been speaking in Colombia about his future amid all the transfer reports linking him away from Anfield – with Barcelona highlighted as his biggest admirers.
In the past weeks, Spanish reports have consistently claimed that the Colombian was a favourite of Barca sporting director Deco.
They have also asserted that Jurgen Klopp’s departure has affected Diaz, and thus he could seek a move away from Merseyside.
Jurgen Klopp acquired Luis Diaz from FC Porto for an initial sum of £37 million, adding much-needed speed and vitality to Liverpool’s quadruple-chasing squad in the 2021/22 season.
However, Diaz was sidelined with a knee injury for most of the 2022/23 season, and it is only in the current campaign that he has been consistently available.
Although the Colombian brings energy and a significant presence on the pitch, he has faced difficulties in front of goal this season, similar to many of Liverpool’s forwards.
Luis Diaz often stands out visually and frequently appeared as Liverpool’s most dynamic attacker throughout the 2023/24 campaign.
Despite this, his goal tally has been underwhelming.
In 32 Premier League appearances, Diaz has scored eight goals and provided five assists.
Billed as the successor to Sadio Mane, whose best Premier League season saw him net 22 goals in 2018/19, it is understandable why many Liverpool fans expected a bit more from the 27-year-old.
But despite the perceived underperformance and the links away from Liverpool, Luis Diaz himself has confirmed he wants to stay.
What did Luis Diaz say about the transfer speculation?
Luis Diaz is currently with the Colombian national team as they prepare for Copa America in the USA this summer.
Diaz started in a 5-1 friendly win over the USA last Saturday and has one more friendly against Boliva this coming Saturday before the tournament gets underway on Friday, 21 June.
Colombia is in Group D alongside Brazil, Paraguay, and Costa Rica, and they will hope to qualify for the knock-out stages as 2nd seed at the very least.
He was quizzed by Colombian outlet Gol Caracol on his future amid interest from Barcelona and PSG, responding emphatically:
“I’m very happy there at Liverpool, it’s a great team and club, I’ve always wanted to play there, so I’m very happy and relaxed.”
“I’m not thinking about anything else, I’m thinking about the Colombia national team, which is where we are.”
