Bayern Munich officially completed the signing of Luis Diaz from Liverpool this week in a deal worth €75 million (£65.5 million).
The Colombian winger has penned a four-year contract with the German champions, marking Bayern’s third-highest transfer fee in their history.
Liverpool had initially rebuffed multiple approaches for their Colombian star, including early interest from Barcelona and Bayern’s opening bid of €67.5 million earlier this month.
However, when Bayern returned with an improved offer that matched Liverpool’s valuation, the Premier League champions reluctantly agreed to sanction the departure of a player who had been instrumental in their title-winning campaign.
Diaz’s desire for a better contract was key to his Liverpool exit, with the Reds unwilling to sanction a new deal for the Colombian.
And in a strange turn of fate, the now former Liverpool man has revealed that he consulted with Wirtz over a move to Bayern Munich – which comes off the back of the German side courting Wirtz for many months before the Reds completed the deal.
Speaking during his unveiling press conference as a new Bayern Munich player, Diaz revealed that he had a few chats with Wirtz – with the 22-year-old explaining that the atmosphere in the stadiums are good and that the city of Munich is nice to live in:
“I spoke to Florian a few times and he told me that the Bundesliga is very intense, similar to the Premier League, that it was very physical, the stadiums are always full,” the Colombian said via @iMiaSanMia.
“He also told me that Munich is a very nice city and that I’d enjoy it.
I thank him for that.”
He was also quizzed on his decision to join the perennial German champions as well as his thoughts on being their third-most expensive signing of all time:
“I’ve decided to join Bayern because it’s a club that fits with my goals.
My expectations are very big, so I wanted to join a big, ambitious club,” the 28-year-old said.
“We want to win everything here, and I want to help the team.”
“I give everything for the team I play for.
But I’m glad the club decided to sign me.”
“I like this club and want to settle in here as quickly as possible.”
