Contradictory reports have emerged regarding Liverpool winger Luis Diaz’s potential summer move to Barcelona, with Spanish and Colombian sources providing vastly different accounts of the player’s intentions.
Spanish media outlet Mundo Deportivo has consistently maintained that Barcelona sporting director Deco has identified Diaz as the club’s primary summer target to address their lack of natural width on the left flank.
The publication asserts that Diaz has “no intention” of renewing at Anfield whilst the Spanish giants remain interested, with Barcelona reportedly willing to triple his current wages.
These claims suggest a player actively seeking an exit route from Merseyside to fulfil what his father previously described as his “dream” of playing for Barcelona.
However, Colombian journalist Pipe Sierra, who originally broke the news of Diaz’s initial move to Liverpool, has provided a starkly different account of the situation.
Sierra categorically stated that reports of Diaz wanting to leave Anfield are “completely false,” adding that “talks for his contract renewal have already begun, and they are working on a longer contract with a salary increase.
Now Mundo Deportivo have offered the most in-depth story of Diaz’s supposed interest in a move to Barcelona, reporting that the winger is making practical moves to organize his Liverpool exit.
According to their report, Diaz is Barcelona’s first choice in the market for other attacking options Marcus Rashford and Nico Williams, with Deco having made him a priority since last year.
The report explains that Barcelona and Diaz have the shared desire to be at their respective clubs next season together, with the player having reportedly already agreed on his possible signing with the Catalan club.
More importantly, Mundo Deportivo reports that Diaz, via his representative, has already started “moving the tree” at Anfield to force his departure, beginning by blocking any discussion for renewals of his contract with Liverpool.
This reported plan is a bare attempt to force Liverpool’s hand in the transfer market, with clubs normally under pressure to offer new contracts or sell players with years remaining on their deal.
The Spanish publication also adds that the Colombian’s representative has made it known to Liverpool in-house that his client would prefer to depart this summer for Barcelona.
This purported direct approach is a notable escalation of transfer pressure, if true, and indicates a player who is not shy about making his desire to force through a transfer known.
Liverpool have reportedly put a £72 million price tag on Diaz, but Barcelona anticipates obtaining him for considerably less because of the proactive role being played by the player in securing the transfer.
It’s certainly a situation to keep eye on in the coming weeks, as two vastly different viewpoints are being offered.
