Luis Diaz has completed a move to Bayern Munich in a deal worth £65.5m for Liverpool.

The Colombia international sat out Saturday's friendly defeat to AC Milan in Hong Kong due to the interest from Bayern and after flying to Japan as part of the club's pre-season contingent on Sunday, he left the camp earlier this week after talks stepped up between the two clubs and an agreement was reached.

Liverpool had initially been reluctant to let the winger leave on the back of an excellent campaign where he scored 17 goals in all competitions for Arne Slot's Premier League champions.

An advance from Barcelona was dismissed out of hand in June before an approach from Bayern was also rebuffed before an offer was made earlier this month.

But the club's stance softened when Bayern made a second offer above £65m for a 28-year-old who had already made it clear he was determined to leave after two new contract offers had been turned down.

Liverpool felt the deal was simply too good to refuse for a player of Diaz’s age, with only seven players 28 or over having commanded a higher fee in football history than the sum the Reds will pocket from the sale.

It means sporting director Richard Hughes has negotiated £190m in player sales since his arrival last year, which has significantly offset the historic outlay this summer which currently stands close to £300m.

Anfield chiefs believe they are well stocked up top having added Hugo Ekitike to the ranks for £79m from Eintracht Frankfurt earlier this month but speculation persists over a potential approach for Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak, who has made clear his intention to leave St James Park.

The exit of Diaz theoretically provides additional funds for a British record transfer of the Sweden international.

It’s understood no sell-on clause existed in Diaz’s contract that took him to Anfield from Porto in January 2022 and the two Carabao Cups and Premier League trophy he won on Merseyside means he leaves having cost the Reds a little over £42m.

It’s a £23m profit on a player who turns 29 in January.
