In ugly scenes following the defeat, former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez was caught on camera appearing to spit at a member of the Seattle Sounders coaching staff during a heated post-match altercation.
The incident occurred during a chaotic brawl that erupted moments after referee blew for full-time
Suarez initially seen grabbing Seattle midfielder Obed Vargas by the neck in what appeared to be a headlock.
His teammate Sergio Busquets then struck Vargas in the face, escalating tensions between both sets of players.
As tempers continued to flare, Suarez became embroiled in a confrontation with Gene Ramirez, the Sounders’ long-serving head of security.
Video footage shows the 38-year-old Uruguayan stepping on Ramirez’s foot to prevent him from moving away, before appearing to spit towards the staff member’s face and cap.
Teammate Oscar Ustari attempted to restrain Suarez, but not before the spitting incident had been captured on camera and broadcast to millions watching around the world
Taking to Instagram, the former Liverpool man issued a statement on his behaviour and apolgised for the incident:
“First of all, I want to congratulate Seattle Sounders for their triumph in the Leagues Cup,” the Uruguayan wrote.
“But above all, I want to apologize for my behavior at the end of the match.”
“It was a moment of great tension and frustration, where just as the match ended, things happened that shouldn’t have happened, but that doesn’t justify the reaction I had.”
“I was wrong and I sincerely regret it.”
“It is not the image I want to show in front of my family, who suffer because of my mistakes, nor in front of my club, which also does not deserve to be affected by something like this,” Suarez explained.
“I feel bad about what happened and I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to acknowledge it and apologize to all those who felt bad about what I did.”
“We know there is still a lot of the season ahead, and we will work together to achieve the successes that this club and all its supporters deserve.”
“A hug to all,” he finished off writing.
