Jurgen Klopp said before the meeting with Southampton that the injury “is a muscle thing and we don’t know exactly how long it will take.” According to the Mirror journalist David Maddock, Keita “could be out for a while” with his continued injury problem.

Naby Keita’s first season at Anfield was blighted by injury and the Guinea international is facing a similarly turbulent start to his second campaign.

Klopp had tipped the dynamic midfielder to have more of an impact this season.

“He looks completely different this season.” Klopp said.

“We expect a lot from him [this season].” Keita returned late for pre-season training after aggravating a thigh injury, which kept him out of for the last two months of last season, on duty for Guinea in the Afirica Cup of Nations.

The latest setback comes as a blow for Keita and Liverpool, but could mean more opportunity for England international Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who himself missed all of last season through a knee injury.
