West Ham manager Graham Potter is expected to make changes for the trip to Wolves in the League Cup after the Hammers were thrashed 5-1 by Chelsea.

Chelsea comfortably swept West Ham away at the London Stadium to consign Potter to back-to-back defeats this season.

West Ham lost 3-0 to Sunderland in their opening match and the pressure is on Potter to change their fortunes.

The London club travel to Wolves, with changes expected to be made to the starting line-up, but a chance to get a win against a side who have also lost two from two in the Premier League so far.

Mads Hermansen’s poor display against Chelsea, means Potter is likely to drop the 25-year-old in favour of last season’s number one Alphonse Areola.

Centre-back Konstantinos Mavropanos has been on the bench for both Premier League fixtures so far, so the Greek international may be given an opportunity in the West Ham back three.

Football Insider Verdict

Potter would have hoped for an easier League Cup draw as the manager urgently needs to install confidence back into the West Ham team.

The match though still does represent an opportunity for West Ham to record a first win of the season, ahead of a match at Nottingham Forest in the Premier League which is unlikely to yield any points.

Potter’s team selection will be interesting to see how seriously he is taking the competition, or whether he is focusing primarily on the Premier League after their poor start.
