Man City have inserted some stipulations into their deal with Wrexham as centre-back Callum Doyle makes the move to the Championship side.

Man City have been lauded for the impressive way in which they have been able to develop young players and turn them into profit over the last few years under Pep Guardiola.

Doyle has always seemed destined to leave the Etihad Stadium on a permanent deal before being able to become a regular in the Spaniard’s side, with the local lad going out on numerous loan deals in recent seasons.

He helped Sunderland win promotion from League One in 2021/22 during his first spell away from the Citizens, and was also part of Leicester’s Championship title-winning squad in 2023/24 amid other temporary moves to Coventry City and Norwich City.

Doyle’s permanent exit from his boyhood club has now been confirmed, and Man City have made sure that they are covered in case he goes on to improve even further in the future.

Ambitious newly-promoted second-tier outfit Wrexham have moved to sign Doyle from City, as they confirmed the deal on Thursday (21 August) with a post on their official X account saying: “A fresh pour of bold.

Callum Doyle joins the squad.”

The 21-year-old centre-back has left the Etihad Stadium for good, but City have left nothing to chance regarding his potential development in the future, with Telegraph reporter Mike McGrath revealing that they have a buy-back option in Doyle’s contract worth £7.5m, while they retain a 25% sell-on clause if the Red Dragons let him go for profit.

Championship new-boys Wrexham have made worldwide headlines over the last few years due to their Hollywood ownership, and the Red Dragons have been linked with signing Jamie Vardy in a move that sums up their lofty ambitions for the years ahead.

Wrexham tried to sign Christian Eriksen but were rejected, and the fact they even attempted to sign a player of his calibre while only just being promoted to the second-tier speaks to their aims, with new man Doyle set to be a stellar signing who will instantly improve their backline.

They have already achieved what many thought was impossible by winning three straight promotions to go from the National League to the Championship, and they are making it clear that they are not resting on their laurels this season despite their success.

Sources told Football Insider in May that Wrexham will have a huge £30m transfer budget to work with this summer, and they have already cut into that by bringing in Doyle, Kieffer Moore and Nathan Broadhead, among others, with a decent second-tier squad now surely set to impress as the campaign goes on.
