Manchester City have confirmed the appointment of former Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders as part of a coaching revamp under Pep Guardiola.

And City have also raided the current Reds staff by taking opposition analyst James French to the Etihad.

Lijnders has been made assistant coach having been out of work since being sacked as manager of Red Bull Salzburg before Christmas after less than six months in charge of the Austrian side.

The Dutchman spent almost 10 years at Liverpool, first as part of Brendan Rodgers' backroom staff in 2014 before working under Jurgen Klopp after the German was made boss the following year.

He briefly left the Reds for a failed managerial stint at Dutch side NEC Nijmegen at the start of 2018 before returning to help Liverpool sweep the board of major honours over the next six years and then departing alongside Klopp in the summer of 2024.

Lijnders has been joined at City by French, who has been appointed set-piece coach after spending 13 years at Liverpool as first-team opposition analyst.

Both will be on the City coaching staff for the upcoming controversial FIFA Club World Cup.

City's director of Football Hugo Viana said: “We are all delighted that Pepijn and James have joined our senior coaching set-up.

“Pepijn and James have each amassed huge experience working in their individual roles over the past few years.
