Man City defender Issa Kabore is on the radar of Championship sides Leicester City and Ipswich Town as he seeks an exit from the Etihad Stadium.

Right-back Kabore has been on Man City’s books since a 2020 move from Belgian side KV Mechelen, whom he then re-joined again on loan for that campaign.

He impressed in further temporary spells at Ligue 1 sides Troyes and Marseille, then enjoyed his first taste of Premier League football in 2023/24 with Luton Town, making 24 top-flight appearances.

Last season saw him struggle for game-time at both Benfica and Werder Bremen in the Primeira Liga and Bundesliga respectively, and journalist Ben Jacobs reported last month that Galatasaray, Rennes and Valencia were all interested in signing him permanently this summer.

He looks to have no future under Pep Guardiola, despite City lacking genuine right-backs in their first-team squad, and now more teams have joined the chase for his services.

A new report from talkSPORT (27 August) states that recently-relegated Championship duo Leicester City and Ipswich Town are both showing interest in Man City defender Kabore.

They also state that both of those clubs face competition for the 24-year-old’s services from from Bundesliga outfit Hamburg and newly-promoted Ligue 1 side Paris FC.

The Citizens would reportedly prefer to sell Burkina Faso international Kabore, but they remain open to another loan move as he seeks an exit in the final week of the summer window.

Football Insider verdict

Kabore has never made a first-team appearance for City, despite being contracted to the club since 2020, but he has trained with Guardiola’s squad in pre-season over the last few years, so is clearly rated by the Spanish boss to some degree.

He was named as a substitute in City’s Premier League clash against Ipswich last season, while he was also in their squad for the Community Shield prior to the 2024/25 campaign, yet went out on loan and struggled to nail down a place at either Benfica or Bremen.

Guardiola insisted this time last year that Kabore had been “training really good,” but he has been unable to get a look-in over the last few months despite Rico Lewis and Matheus Nunes being his only right-back options for the season ahead.

Lewis is reportedly set to sign a new five-year deal at Man City soon, and him staying at the club amid interest from Nottingham Forest is likely to push the Burkina Faso international out of the Etihad, as having him as a third-choice right-back would seem pointless when they can potentially get a transfer fee for his services.

Whether Kabore will leave on loan or permanently is currently unclear, but a move to either Leicester or Ipswich would make sense as both sides look to get promoted back to the top-flight at the first time of asking.
