Man City may have ended Everton’s pursuit of Jack Grealish with a lofty demand that the Toffees are unlikely to be able to accept.
Grealish is set to depart Man City ahead of the new season following a poor 2024/25 campaign that saw him struggle to nail down a spot in Pep Guardiola’s starting eleven.
The 29-year-old made just seven Premier League starts last term, and with a move away beckoning, Football Insider reported in June that Everton and Newcastle United were leading the race for Grealish’s services.

Man City chiefs are considering loaning Grealish out due to his high wages, and Everton have recently opened talks over a temporary move for the Man City man [The Athletic] after Football Insider revealed in June that Grealish is “excited” about a potential move to Merseyside.
Football Insider revealed on Tuesday (5 August) that David Moyes has backed himself to unlock Grealish’s best form if he makes the move, but it has now been plunged into uncertainty following a new development on City’s end.
A new report from talkSPORT (6 August) claimed that Man City want Grealish’s £300,000-a-week wages covered in full by any club taking him on loan.
They state that any deal that sees him leave the Etihad Stadium has been complicated by the Citizens demanding that any interested clubs must cover his massive wage packet, and that move is surely set to end Everton’s interest in a loan for the 29-year-old.

Football Insider sources have previously stated that Everton may stand a better chance at agreeing a subsidised deal for Grealish this summer, but Man City would still need to contribute a significant portion of his salary to make a deal happen.
With that said, the Toffees seem unlikely to proceed any further in their attempts to take the England winger to Merseyside following this development, and could instead focus on different targets after Everton saw two bids rejected for Southampton talent Tyler Dibling.

It seems like an almost foregone conclusion that Grealish will be on his way out of the Etihad Stadium this summer, and this latest reveal will come as a major blow to both him and the Toffees, with a deal seemingly set to progress well, financials aside.
The 29-year-old’s time under Guardiola has been one of both ups and downs over the years, but his last season certainly included more of the latter as he failed to make any sort of impact in either the Premier League or Champions League while City suffered a surprising downfall.
Grealish certainly still has a lot to offer, though, as he enters what should be his prime as a player, and he would surely be a good fit in David Moyes’ squad, with attackers needed to bolster a lacking forward line that saw Everton end the last campaign with the fourth-least league goals scored as a team.

The Scottish boss is known to be a keen motivator of players who may be down on their luck, and so it is no surprise that Football Insider have revealed that Grealish would be open to joining, while Moyes wants to work with a player of his talent to return him to his past glory.
Grealish is a target for Serie A champions Napoli, but the chance to stay based in the north-west of England with a decent-sized club like Everton is surely one that the former Villa man would jump at if the opportunity arises, but both he and the Toffees will now be concerned that a deal is impossible due to the Citizens’ wage demands.
