Manchester City may not allow young star Claudio Echeverri to join Roma this summer after new reports of their transfer plans for him emerged.
Echeverri officially joined Man City in January 2024 from boyhood club River Plate, after Football Insider had revealed a month earlier that Pep Guardiola’s side were closing in on the Argentina youth international’s signature.
He rejoined River on loan upon his arrival in Manchester, however, and Football Insider revealed in September that Echeverri was finally set to join-up with his new City teammates in January, which he soon did as he went in Guardiola’s squad for the second-half of the last campaign.
The 19-year-old attacking midfielder did not make much of an impact at the Etihad Stadium in the final few months of the last campaign, but did score his maiden City strike at the Club World Cup in June against Al-Ain.
The Athletic reported in June that the 19-year-old is set to leave on loan this summer, while Italian outlet la Gazzetta dello Sport have claimed that Roma are pushing to land him for the upcoming campaign, but new reports around his future have plunged a move abroad into doubt.

Fellow City Football Group club Girona have also been mooted with interest in signing Echeverri by Fabrizio Romano, but The Athletic have revealed that a move to take the Argentine playmaker to the La Liga side is “not on the cards” right now.

Instead, they state that City would prefer to loan him to a Premier League side this summer, while sources close to the player believe that a loan move is needed to ensure he plays enough as he targets a place in la Albiceleste’s senior squad for the World Cup next year.

Football Insider verdict
There was always the obvious possibility that Echeverri would end up back out on loan this summer, given his age, lack of experience and City’s title aspirations, but his showing against Al-Ain was a positive sign for his chances of staying at the club ahead of next season.
Guardiola was full of praise for the Argentina youth international after the game, despite the fact he was forced off at half-time with an ankle injury, calling him “an incredible player” and insisting that his maiden goal for the club was “fantastic.”

At 19-years-old he is clearly a huge talent, but City have an abundance of attacking options at the minute, especially after Rayan Cherki recently joined the club from Lyon for an initial £30.5million, and so while he has not yet officially left, a move away certainly looks likely.
He could not continue his strong vein of form in the CWC, with the Al-Ain game his last as City were knocked out in the round of 16, and a move to a lower Premier League side could be exactly what he needs in 2025/26 as he aims to prove himself in English football and to Guardiola.
