Man City have been boosted in their pursuit of the Premier League title despite having endured a poor start to the season so far.

That is according to former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that the arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma is a “huge difference-maker”.

Man City completed the signing of Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain on transfer deadline day, with Ederson joining Turkish giants Fenerbahce.

The deal initially raised question marks over the future of James Trafford, but their gamble has already paid off after his display in their 3-0 win against Man United.

Donnarumma is believed to be on a huge wage at Man City after earning £500,000 at PSG, but he may be worth every penny if he can elevate City to a title win.

Brown first told Football Insider in May that Man City were plotting a move for Donnarumma and regarded him as one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

The former scout, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, has insisted the 26-year-old could be the missing piece for Man City’s title hopes.

“Donnarumma will win Man City points and games by himself,” he told Football Insider.

“It’s a massive boost for any club to have a goalkeeper of that stature and that quality, because he’s a huge difference-maker for the defensive unit.

“You saw the City players when he made that save against Man United, they almost gasped and were celebrating with him because it was a big moment.

“If United had got a goal back at that stage, the momentum would be with them and you never know what can happen from there, so that’s what I mean when I saw he will win them games.

“Donnarumma looks like what he is, a world-class goalkeeper.

“He comes and claims crosses and gives the defenders confidence that he’s in charge, there’s no panic at the back because they know they can rely on him.

“They’ve had a poor start, but the expectation at Man City is that they challenge for the league title, and Donnarumma will play a major, major part in that if they do.”

City’s trophyless season last time out was followed by a slow start to the Premier League season, but there are now hopes they can get back to their previous best.

Declan Rice and Mikel Arteta were stunned by Donnarumma after PSG knocked Arsenal out on their way to lifting last season’s Champions League.

The Italy international put in two fantastic performances across the two-legged tie, and led Arteta to insist he was the difference for PSG in their eventual progression.

Now wearing the sky blue of Man City, he has already given the impression that he will continue to be equally as effective in the Premier League.

Man City paid less than £30million to land Donnarumma from PSG in the summer, and are already seeing the benefits of his addition to the starting XI.

Erling Haaland has also been full of praise for the goalkeeper, as he labelled him “unbelievable” live on Sky Sports for his display against Man United.
