Man United are planning to trigger the extension clause in Jadon Sancho’s contract to prevent him leaving on a free transfer next summer.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed what sources have told him about the 25-year-old’s long-term future at Old Trafford beyond the 2025/26 season.

With just one year remaining on his contract, the winger would have been free to discuss permanent moves in January despite being on loan at Aston Villa.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that United are “delighted” with the loan deal after initially fearing they would struggle to shift his wages.

Villa are believed to be covering around 80 per cent of the 25-year-old’s significant wage packet, easing the considerable financial burden on Ruben Amorim‘s side.

This came after Football Insider exclusively revealed that Man United had slashed Sancho’s asking price alongside Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund to force through moves.

Brown told Football Insider on 19 August that Man United were confident of selling Sancho despite the winger turning down a late offer from Roma.

Despite the efforts to move him off of the books in the summer, and there being no hope for his long-term future at Old Trafford, they do not want to lose him for free.

O’Rourke explained that United will move to secure the winger’s future by triggering the option to extend his deal by one year, before aiming to sell permanently next year.

“United, just to protect themselves and their asset, will probably take up that option to extend Jadon Sancho’s contract,” he told Football Insider.

“They want to ensure he doesn’t walk out on a free transfer next summer.

“The main thing for Sancho at the moment is to be playing football and playing regularly.

“The talent is there, there’s no doubt about that, so he’ll be looking to get back to his best.

“That situation would be good for everybody involved.

“It would be good for United because it would put him in the shop window and potentially increase his price tag ahead of next summer.

“And it would be good for Sancho to be back playing at a high level.”

Sancho is not the only Man United player who is expected to leave the club long-term, with Andre Onana’s future still up in the air after the transfer window closed.

Brown told Football Insider on 4 September that Onana has no future at Man United and they are planning to entertain offers in the January transfer window.

Amorim has made his views towards Onana clear, brutally dropping him from the first three league games of the season before signing Senne Lammens.

Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed on 3 September that Onana could move to the Saudi Pro League where the transfer window does not close until 23 September.
