Man United have been backed to emulate Sheffield United’s recent re-appointment of Chris Wilder by sacking Ruben Amorim and bringing back an old head-coach to take over.
Man United lost 3-0 to arch-rivals Man City on Sunday (14 September) to further deepen their current woes under Ruben Amorim.
The Old Trafford outfit were easily beaten by their noisy neighbours at the Etihad Stadium in another tough loss for Amorim’s men, with just four points now taken from their first four Premier League games of the new season.
Their poor league form added to an embarrassing Carabao Cup defeat to League Two side Grimsby Town has led many fans and neutrals alike to ask questions of the Portuguese head-coach’s position in charge of the club.
Former Red Devils scout Mick Brown has told Football Insider that Man United chiefs are losing patience with Amorim, and they have now been urged to copy Championship side Sheffield United‘s recent move by re-hiring an ex-head-coach who had a better record in charge than Amorim’s.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was a hero at Man United as a player and he returned to the club as caretaker manager in December 2018 before being handed the permanent job in charge in March 2019, as he led them to sixth, third and second-placed Premier League finishes and the 2021 Europa League final.
He was sacked in November 2021 with the Red Devils sat seventh in the top-flight, and the club are yet to finish above third in the league since his departure.

Former player and current pundit Jamie O’Hara urged the club to sack Amorim and replace him with Solskjaer amid their current woes, while speaking live on talkSPORT on Monday (15 September, 10:12pm), emulating Sheffield United’s recent re-appointment of club legend Chris Wilder for the third time as boss.
He said: “This is the worst Man United team I’ve seen.
I can’t believe Ruben Amorim is still in charge, honestly when are they going to let it go?
When are they going to just…do what Sheffield United have done, just swallow their pride [and say] ‘we got this wrong?'”
“Get Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] back…get Ole back in.
They’ll be playing Rotherham next season.”
Solskjaer’s tenure as United boss is arguably the closest that the club have got to replicating the heady days of Sir Alex Ferguson, and it was still way off those levels, but that shows how poor they have been over the last 12 years.
He had a 54.17% win rate while in charge of the club, which is a huge improvement on Amorim’s 36.17% win rate that is now the worst of any permanent United manager since World War II.

He previously admitted that he would say “yes every day of the week” if offered the United job back in September 2024, but his recent stint at Besiktas which saw him sacked last month after failing to make the Champions League league phase would likely put the Red Devils off making him their head-coach once again.
Regardless of who they want to hire next, it is pretty clear that Amorim is coming to the end of his time at Old Trafford after an ill-fated 11 month spell in charge, and United simply need to put him out of his misery sooner rather than later.
