Man United’s free-spending transfer window is showing no signs of slowing down as Ruben Amorim targets a new midfielder.
That is the verdict of football finance expert Dan Plumley, who told Football Insider exclusively that it “wouldn’t be a surprise” to see the Red Devils continue to spend, despite failing to qualify for European competition.
The club’s ability to spend this summer was called into question after Jim Ratcliffe claimed the 20-time champions would have run out of money at the end of 2025 without his drastic cost-cutting measures, which included laying off hundreds of non-playing staff members [The Standard].

And yet, Man United have spent over £200million on the trio of Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, and Matheus Cunha this summer [transfermarkt].
What’s more, Amorim’s side have enquired about the availability of Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba, signalling that their summer business is far from over.
This article contains exclusive comment from Dan Plumley, a football finance expert and senior lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University.
On 16 June, Plumley explained to Football Insider how Man United’s use of two different companies was causing confusion over their financial standing.

Manchester United plc registered a pre-tax loss of £130.7m, but the company with which the club file their accounts to UEFA and the Premier League, Red Football Ltd, had made a loss of just £36.2m [The Athletic].
As such, the club were not in a precarious position with PSR, and Plumley told Football Insider he expects the club to continue spending this summer.

He said: “In terms of, can they spend more?
Yes.
“How much more could they spend?
There’s a little bit of guesswork in that.
“£200m is a sizeable outlay, but it could go a little bit higher, and you know there’s rumours that they want a couple of midfielders as well.
“It wouldn’t be a surprise to see them spend again this summer, and there’s all those factors in the mix there that mean that ultimately they can spend, despite the fact that they’ve got no European football and they’ve not had the best season on the pitch last season.”
The Red Devils may struggle to sign Baleba as Brighton have little incentive to sell with less than a week to go before the start of the Premier League season.
Instead, Man United may look to make a move for Morten Hjulmand of Sporting CP in Portugal.

The Denmark international has blossomed into one of Europe’s best box-to-box midfielders and was a favourite of Amorim’s during his time in charge of the Portuguese champions.
However, much like Brighton, Sporting have little motivation to sell, and United would be required to stump up a significant fee to sign the 26-year-old.
