Man United are exploring a “massive signing” in the final weeks of the window but have their work cut out prising Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson can’t see Man United signing the PSG and Italy number one in a surprise deal this summer.
Andre Onana has fallen well below expectations since his move from Inter in 2023 and hasn’t shown he’s at the level required to take Man United, leaving Ruben Amorim with even more work to do in the market.
Robinson told Football Insider on 8 August that PSG would make Man United pay over the odds for Donnarumma if their interest advances, and this could result in Amorim turning his attention elsewhere.

Donnarumma’s expected wage demands of £435,000 per week would be a stumbling block for Man United, and Robinson said that Donnarumma would immediately displace Onana as their number one.
The ex-Spurs shot-stopper told Football Insider that Man United’s goalkeeping pursuit could continue very late in to this summer’s transfer window, but he doesn’t see Donnarumma heading to Old Trafford.
This article contains exclusive comment from Paul Robinson, a football pundit and former England, Tottenham and Leeds goalkeeper.

United’s former chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that internal discussions are already underway over a move to bring Donnarumma to Old Trafford, but PSG are in no mood to lose him.
Speaking on the latest Inside Track, Robinson acknowledged that United need far better than Onana between the sticks if they’re to compete next season, but doesn’t think Donnarumma will be the one.
“The rumours of Manchester United and goalkeepers haven’t gone away – and I don’t think they will, because Onana’s not at the level that people expected him to be”, Robinson told Football Insider.

“The goalkeeper market is something I thoroughly expect Manchester United to explore between now and the end of the window.
“Donnarumma would be a massive signing for them, but it’s nearing on impossible for me.”
Man United‘s priorities so far this summer had focused on the front end of the team, after they finished last season with a goal difference of –10 and just 44 scored across a record-breakingly poor campaign.

Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo had already bolstered their faltering frontline significantly, but the completion of Benjamin Sesko’s £74million move from RB Leipzig completes Amorim’s attacking rebuild.
Attention will now turn to the rear end of Amorim’s team, and with Onana‘s future uncertain at best, the Red Devils have just over three weeks left to make good on Robinson’s prediction and sign a top keeper in the form of Donnarumma.
