Man United fans are all in agreement that this season should be Harry Maguire’s last with the club.

The England international has long been plagued by criticism from supporters of the Red Devils, but the defender seemed to have turned a corner last season.

Man United dismissed enquiries about Maguire from other clubs this summer, the club’s former chief scout, Mick Brown, told Football Insider exclusively.

But with just a year remaining on his contract and his performances regressing sharply, Man United may let Maguire leave for nothing next summer, and that may be a move that pleases the club’s fans.

Maguire was culpable for Igor Thiago’s first goal against Brentford, playing the Brazilian striker onside in the eighth minute.

The defender then struggled for much of the match as the former Club Brugge striker’s movement pulled him to and fro.

Following the disastrous performance, United‘s fans took to social media, voicing their disdain at Ruben Amorim‘s decision to start the defender over the in-form Leny Yoro, and calling for the former Leicester man to be sold.

One fan said: “Maguire is an agent sent to destroy Man United from the inside out.”

Another chimed in by saying: “Dalot, Maguire, Shaw, and Bruno [Fernandes] should be up for sale in the summer.”

One United fan then said: “Starting with a backline of Maguire and De Ligt and asking them to play high up against a pacey team like Brentford clearly shows a lack of preparation and understanding by Amorim and his staff.

“Amorim has constantly made choices that bring the worst out in the players, not the best.”

That most frustrating aspect of Amorim’s insistence on deploying a 3-4-2-1 system isn’t just that it forces players to play out of position.

It also has to do with the fact that he doesn’t ever evolve the tactical set-up or make changes depending on the opposition team and their strengths or weaknesses.

Rather than dropping a little deeper, allowing Maguire to spend less time spinning and running back towards his own goal, a weakness the defender has struggled with throughout his entire career, Amorim insists upon keeping his defensive line as high as possible.

As pointed out by the fans, Brentford are a pacey team that transitions the ball forward quickly.

But rather than take note of that and adapt, Amorim blindly puts his team out, hoping things will get better.
