Ruben Amorim is coming under fire from Manchester United supporters for his misuse of forward Matheus Cunha.

The Brazil international signed at Old Trafford from Wolves this summer following a superb 17-goal, six-assist haul in 36 appearances across all competitions last season.

Cunha primarily thrived in an attacking midfield/second striker role at Molineux, registering 13 of his goals and all of his assists in 26 outings in those positions (Transfermarkt) — compared to just one goal in six games as a No.9.

However, Amorim has deployed Cunha as a striker in each of his Manchester United appearances so far, and despite showing plenty of promise, he’s yet to score or assist.

You would assume that Cunha will be moved back into the No.10 position once Benjamin Sesko is ready to start up front.

However, many United fans are criticising Amorim for plugging the Brazilian into that gap in the first place, accusing him of not getting the best from the 26-year-old — who missed a couple of big chances in Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Fulham.

Playing Cunha out of position feels especially egregious when Amorim still has Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund at his disposal, alongside Sesko.

Some fans even went as far as to call for Amorim to be sacked, with the Portuguese coach picking up just seven wins and 28 points from 29 Premier League matches in charge of United so far.

Man United’s Premier League record so far under Amorim has been laughable, and already, they sit 16th with just one point from two games.

To say it’s the majority of supporters who want him out would be inaccurate.

They know the context, they read everything, and they know they are playing in a club where they need to be better,” Amorim responded when asked by Sky Sports if his players need to be stronger mentally.

“But for me, it’s completely different during the week.

They work really hard.

Today, they worked really hard.

Sometimes not in a good way, but they work hard, so I can work with that.

“I am very confident that we are going to get many wins.”
