Casemiro’s poor disciplinary record means that he will not be trusted by Ruben Amorim at Man United this season and is set to be used as a back-up in midfield rather than a regular starter.

That is according to former England and Southampton star Matt Le Tissier, who exclusively told Football Insider that he can foresee Casemiro slipping down the pecking order under Ruben Amorim following his red card against Chelsea.

The Brazil international joined Man United from Real Madrid in 2022 for an initial £60million [Sky Sports], but he has struggled in the three years since amid their own overall woes both on and off the pitch.

He won three La Liga titles and the Champions League five times in his spell in Spain, yet United fans have often been left bemused at his lack of quality on the ball and authority as a leader since he moved to their club.

Now 33-years-old, Casemiro’s latest blunder came as he was sent-off against Chelsea for a second yellow card while United were 2-0 up on Saturday (20 September) just minutes after scoring their second goal.

That was the fourth red card of his Red Devils career so far, and he has now been backed to lose his place in the starting eleven for the rest of this season despite playing from the off in four of the first five league games of the campaign.

Football Insider revealed following the end of last season that Man United would consider offers for Casemiro during the summer window due to his high wages not reflecting his impact on their team.

He only made 18 starts in the Premier League last term, but looked to have found his place in Ruben Amorim‘s side at the start of 2025-26 prior to his recent red card.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Brazilian’s long-term future at Old Trafford, Le Tissier said: “I really feel like the manager is going to be looking at Casemiro now and thinking ‘can I trust you in the long-term?’ Certainly not too long-term as he is 33, but ‘can I trust you for the rest of this season in that important area of the field?'”

“I think the answer is going to be…there is too many reds.

He will find himself dropping down the pecking order at Manchester United.

It will be interesting to see if he can get back into the team after he has served his latest suspension.”

Man United were linked with Brighton’s Carlos Baleba throughout the window, yet Amorim decided to focus his transfer efforts on bolstering his forward line rather than other areas of the pitch.

This latest poor showing from Casemiro has only further highlighted their need for another addition, and Baleba would have been a top signing considering his current ability and potential to get even better.

Football Insider revealed on 13 September that Baleba still remains top of Man United’s wishlist with a move for his services potentially on the horizon next summer, but his price-tag is only set to rise if he has a decent 2025-26 campaign.

Manuel Ugarte is United’s only other holding midfielder similar to Casemiro, and much like the Brazilian, he has also struggled at the club despite arriving with a good reputation from PSG last summer, so it is very clear that they needed to sign a new player in that position over the summer window.
