Rasmus Hojlund is likely to find himself surplus to requirements at Man United as Benjamin Sesko nears a move to Old Trafford.

The 22-year-old has been struggling for form over the past year, notching just 10 goals and two assists during the 2024/25 season, and that could quickly bring an end to his time in England.

Mick Brown told Football Insider that Man United would accept an offer for Hojlund should they find a suitable replacement, but the young striker has reiterated his urge to fight for his spot in the team.

Nonetheless, Sesko appears set to choose the Red Devils over Newcastle United, with Sky Sports’ Florian Plettenberg reporting (6 August) that a complete agreement has been reached between team and player.

It could be just days until the RB Leipzig star is announced at Old Trafford on a big-money deal, and it appears that Hojlund’s days are numbered amid strong links with an exit this summer.

According to iNews (5 August), Hojlund could also be added to the list of sanctioned sales, alongside current “bomb squad” Alejandro Garnacho, Tyrell Malacia, Jadon Sancho, and Antony.

The 22-year-old has failed to live up to expectations at Old Trafford, with it being understood that the Red Devils could accept as low as £30million for his signature amid strong interest from Italy.

He arrived in England just two summers ago on a £72million deal from Atalanta [BBC Sport], but could now leave for half of his original transfer fee following an extremely poor 2024/25 campaign.

Football Insider verdict

The Red Devils have been crying out for a star striker ever since Cristiano Ronaldo‘s departure in November 2022, and many believed the club had found that figure when Hojlund arrived.

Amorim, who is under pressure at Man United, has been able to add Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha to the squad this summer, but he does not appear to be finished in the transfer market just yet.

Sesko, who had been tipped to join Newcastle, is now leaning towards the 20-time Premier League champions instead of a move to St James’ Park, and fans are buzzing for his arrival.

That does raise questions over Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee, however, and the club still need to find a way of getting Anthony, Sancho, Garnacho, and Malacia off the books this summer.

While Marcus Rashford has sealed his season-long loan to Barcelona, it almost feels as if United are kicking the can down the road, not wanting to deal with his future for another 12 months.

There is still plenty of business to be done at Old Trafford, and only a few weeks to complete these deals, but signing Sesko from RB Leipzig will be a shrewd piece of transfer business.
