Andre Onana will only return to Manchester United in an emergency situation as he prepares to leave the club.
Onana’s loan move to Trabzonspor is expected to be confirmed imminently, after the shot-stopper fell out of favour under Ruben Amorim.
Man United completed the deadline day signing of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp, as the club looks to move in a different direction in terms of goalkeepers.
Despite still having three years left on his contract, Onana has little chance of a future at Old Trafford, even after his loan spell.
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that there is no way back for the 29-year-old at United unless there is an emergency situation in the goalkeeping department.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that it is very hard to see Onana returning to Man United, and that he will only come back in extreme circumstances.

Wyness pointed out the irony in the fact that Onana will get a pay rise at Trabzonspor, despite his dismal performances in recent times.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “It was interesting to see he got a pay rise out of the whole deal, because of the lack of bonuses at Man United, and the Turkish tax regime.
“I think it will be very hard for him to come back.
Look, he’s there in theory to come back from a loan if needed, but I think United have got to move on with that goalkeeping position, and somebody’s got to make it their own.
“I don’t think I can see a way back for him at Old Trafford.
When you leave on loan like this, then I think it is very hard to come back.
This is where United have a chance to really move forward.
If they keep going backwards, then they can’t move forward.”
Meanwhile, Man United are desperate to sign a defensive midfielder in the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.
The Red Devils wanted to add some quality in the middle of the park during the summer, but were unable to get a deal across the line.
Sources say that Man United are looking for a powerful and athletic player to give their midfield a new lease of life.
Amorim is currently utilising a duo of Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro in the centre, but feels it is an area that can be improved upon when the transfer window reopens.
