Manchester United reportedly attempted to thrash out a swap deal with Flamengo in an attempt to take defensive midfielder Joao Gomes to Old Trafford.

The Red Devils were prepared for Andreas Pereira to join the Brazilian club on a permanent deal if Flamengo allowed Gomes, who is now a target for Liverpool, to move in the opposite direction.

Pereira, who is now 26, played 29 times for Flamengo last season and regularly lined up alongside Gomes.

According to talkSPORT's South American football expert Tim Vickery, United were willing to sacrifice Pereira in exchange for Gomes.

Gomes has already played over 100 games for Flamengo, despite still being 21.

"Flamengo's vice-president Marcos Braz has insisted that his club are yet to receive any offers for the youngster."There was no proposal for Joao Gomes, there was no consultation for him," Braz said earlier this week.

"So it's a lot of lies that have been propagated about Joao Gomes since the beginning of these renewal issues.
