A lot has been said about the money that Liverpool has spent during the summer window — and in fairness, that is semi-understandable considering the way the Reds usually operate in the transfer market.

Liverpool's recruitment record over the last 10 years is fantastic, but never before has the club splurged even close to the amount of money that it has during the ongoing window.

And yet, despite committing to a spend of around $400 million on Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong and Giorgi Mamardashvili, Liverpool's 2025 net spend is far lower than that sum.

That's because the Reds have brought in around $180 million from player sales, with Luis Diaz, Jarell Quansah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Caoimhin Kelleher, Tyler Morton and Nat Phillips all bringing in fees.

Darwin Nunez's impending move to Al-Hilal is set to increase that amount substantially, while Harvey Elliott and Ben Doak could still fetch decent fees, as could Federico Chiesa and Kostas Tsimikas.

It is because of those sales and prospective departures that Liverpool remains in a position to pursue Alexander Isak, who would almost certainly command a Premier League record fee were he to move to Anfield.

While Liverpool sells shrewdly, a few miles down the road Manchester United is yet to raise a penny from player sales, despite Ruben Amorim having plenty of unwanted players in his squad.

Marcus Rashford has been shipped off to Barcelona on loan, saving the Red Devils millions in wages over the course of the season, but in terms of money raised from player sales, there is none.

May's Europa League final against Tottenham was billed as a win-or-bust game for United, with the narrative that a loss would leave the Old Trafford club without a budget for summer transfers.

That has not transpired, and United is about to welcome its third big signing of the summer in Benjamin Sesko after acquiring Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo earlier in the window.

Yet the focus remains on Liverpool's dealings, with many neutrals questioning just how the Reds could possibly afford Isak after bringing in Wirtz and Co.

The truth is, winning the Premier League is a lucrative achievement, as is qualifying for the Champions League — and as mentioned earlier, it helps when you buy well and sell well, which is exactly what Liverpool has done in recent years.
