There has been a fair bit of transfer target overlap regarding Manchester City and Liverpool this summer already.
There is no doubt that the Cityzens will want to take the fight to Arne Slot’s men next season.
Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al-Mubarak has already asserted as much, saying recently:
“We will be back.
And by the way, we’ve been doing that since January.”
“I can assure you, this club will do everything possible to come back to the standards that we know we all can achieve – and that we know we will achieve.”
Manchester City’s initial interest in Florian Wirtz signaled their ambition to secure a long-term successor for Kevin De Bruyne?
However, the financial realities of a deal potentially exceeding €300 million – including transfer fees and wages – forced City to withdraw.
The German international is now on the verge of signing for Liverpool FC.
Milos Kerkez is another player that City sniffed around for, but it became clear that the Hungarian only wanted Anfield.
With Wirtz off the table, Manchester City have shifted focus to Lyon’s Rayan Cherki, securing personal terms with the 21-year-old Frenchman as reported by Fabrizio Romano.
The Italian took to X to report:
“Understand Manchester City and Rayan Cherki have reached an agreement on personal terms!”
“Official bid from Manchester City to OL will be submitted in the next hours… …in order to advance after initial club to club talks starter over the weekend.”
Cherki’s 12 goals and 20 assists in Ligue 1 made him an attractive alternative, and it was reported that Arne Slot personally flew to France last week to meet the 21-year-old.
However, the meeting was scheduled before Wirtz became advance, and it was understood that the Dutchman was honoring his commitment.
