The Reds also generated significant funds to help finance this record-breaking spend, earning around £250million in sales as players such as Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, and Trent Alexander-Arnold departed.

Liverpool’s women’s team have also been busy bolstering their squad.

The club have confirmed the signing of Manchester City defender Risa Shimizu on a season-long loan.

Liverpool have been active in the final days of the Women’s Super League transfer window, completing a loan move for Barcelona teenager Emilia Szymczak.

They have also added Beata Olsson from Kristianstads DFF and secured the permanent signing of Alejandra Bernabe from Chelsea.

Shimizu, an experienced right-back, reunites with Reds head coach Gareth Taylor, who signed her from West Ham United while at Manchester City last summer.

The 29-year-old has been a Japan regular since her senior debut in October 2017, featuring at two Women’s World Cups and two Olympic Games.

Shimizu came through the youth ranks at Tokyo Verdy Beleza, where she became one of the Nadeshiko League’s most consistent performers.

She won five league titles and was named in the division’s Best XI every year from 2017 to 2020, before captaining the club in 2020.

She moved to the Barclays Women’s Super League with West Ham in 2022, featuring in all 44 league games across two seasons and playing every minute of the 2023-24 campaign.

City signed her last summer, but an ACL injury suffered at the 2024 Olympics ruled her out of action in Manchester.

“I’m excited to join this club and I’m looking forward to being on the pitch for this club as well,” she told Liverpoolfc.com in her first interview at the AXA Melwood Training Centre.

“I know what type of football the coach plays from our time together at City so I thought it was the right fit for me and that’s why I chose this club.”

“Because I was injured obviously I haven’t played for a year but when I stood back on the pitch during a training match at City I felt that enjoyment again

So hopefully I can feel that enjoyment at Liverpool now and hopefully contribute to the club,” said Shimizu, who has returned to full training ahead of the new season.

“I want to play and get minutes and contribute to wins for Liverpool, and as a club hopefully we can continue to aim for the top end of the table.”
