Jeremie Frimpong became Liverpool’s first signing of the summer after he was unveiled on 30th May.

The signing of the Dutch full-back marks the beginning of what is set to be a transformative summer transfer window for the club, with a real focus on backing Arne Slot and retaining the Premier League title.

Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth and Florian Wirtz also of Bayer Leverkusen like Frimpong, appear to be the next two on the way to Merseyside, with deals for the pair seemingly reaching the final stages.

After spending four and a half years at Bayer Leverkusen, Jeremie Frimpong decided it was time to return to a Premier League club, after he rose through Manchester City’s academy.

Frimpong spent nine years at Manchester City, before moving up to Scotland to represent Celtic from 2019-2021, and then moving to Germany where he has flourished into a brilliant player.

Upon confirmation of his move to Liverpool, Bayer Leverkusen delivered a heartfelt message that encapsulated just how much he meant to the club.

They wrote in a statement: “Your joy, energy and heart lit up every room, training session and matchday.

We will miss your laugh, your dance moves and your hugs, but most of all, we will miss the incredible person behind the player.”

Whilst the Dutchman departed Germany as a much-liked figure, he hasn’t been loved throughout every stage of his football career.

Despite spending nearly a decade at Manchester City’s academy, Frimpong never made a single senior appearance for the side and this was down to the club telling him that he was not good enough to make it at senior level for the club.

Speaking to SportBible in early 2024, the Dutch international explained how he very quickly realized his future was not at Manchester City.

“I remember going in for a new contract and that’s when I knew my path at City was different.”

“They were talking about how I couldn’t get into the team and were comparing me to other players in the academy that were doing better than me.

I clearly don’t have a future here” so I’ve got to take a different step.”

It has been quite the turnaround for Jeremie Frimpong since that initial setback, and he will be hoping to make the hierarchies at Manchester City come to regret their decision by performing well at Liverpool.
