Manchester United set for further regret as Kobbie Mainoo plots loan exit

Wed 10 September 2025 18:33, UK

Manchester United will rue their decisions if Kobbie Mainoo joins Napoli on loan in the January transfer window.

Ruben Amorim was left angry after the Man United hierarchy blocked Mainoo’s loan exit in the summer transfer window.

Meanwhile, the 20-year-old was named in Amorim’s starting lineup when Manchester United were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Grimsby Town last month.

Amorim’s busy summer transfer window saw Man United sell Alejandro Garnacho to Chelsea.

On the other hand, fellow academy graduate Mainoo has remained at Old Trafford despite falling in the pecking order.

According to ESPN on Tuesday, 9 September, the England international could seek to join Napoli on loan in January if his situation doesn’t change.

Amid a lack of game time, Mainoo was keen to leave Manchester United on loan in the summer.

Meanwhile, former Red Devils star Scott McTominay has established himself as one of the best midfielders in Europe since joining Napoli from the Old Trafford club.

While Mainoo could join the likes of McTominay and Antony in becoming a better player after leaving Manchester United, he may still have the opportunity to turn matters around.

Should Amorim decide to call upon the 20-year-old, he could prove his worth in the Premier League once again.

The England man previously showed his class for Man United when he played an instrumental role in their FA Cup triumph in 2024, which helped him go on to earn 10 caps for the Three Lions.

Furthermore, Amorim’s midfield has been unconvincing so far this season, while the Red Devils have endured a slow start to the new campaign.

If Mainoo successfully beats either Casemiro or Manuel Ugarte to a starting berth alongside Bruno Fernandes, he could help Man United perform better.

However, if Amorim continues to leave Mainoo on the bench, as seen in their loss to Arsenal and draw at Fulham, the 20-year-old can instead show his class in Napoli colours.
